Can someone clear up an issue i recently had. I booked my flight and booked 1 bag. I then checked in online and on my ticket it said 1 bag checked. When i arrived at the airport i discovered that my second bag was 2 big so i decided to go on line and book a second bag. So i did this and i paid 15eur for this on line. When i got to the bag drop off and told the lady at d desk she told me it was 15eur per KG? no i did not see this anywhere and i looked at the recipt from aerlingus and there was nothing about this? My bag was 11kg so she said that she would have to charge me 165eur but i explaned this and she said that the minminum she could charge me is 75eur? I just want to know who was right? should my bag only cost 15 for the bag of 15 per KG? anyone know anthing. Many thanks for you help.

It says the charge is €15 per bag, not per kg. There is a charge of €15 per kg (at the airport) for excess weight over 20kg on any bag. You should not have been charged this.

The most you should have been charged is €20, which is the cost of checking a bag that wasn't pre-booked online. Since you did book it online though, you shouldn't have even been charged that.

From my reading of it (I could be wrong)

You're allowed up to 9 bags if you're booked on a Low Fare rate. That can be up to 20Kg in total (so 9 bags at 2Kg each).

Everything after that is charged the €15 per Kg.

It's confusing. I read that as €15 per bag. You can take up to 9 bags but the total weight for all 9 combined can't be more than 20Kg (which is crap).

The alternative of charging €15 per bag with a 20Kg limit on each and with a limit of 9 bags would be a pretty good deal.

Ah yes, the excess applies to anything over 20kg in total of all your bags. So what was the weight of the 1st bag?

Yea, my first bag was 20KG, and the second bag was 11kg. So i was at the weight on my first bag and i guess they are right.

Many thanks everyone for the reply. will read the small print in future. I guess she wask kind enought to just charge me for a minimum of 5kg.

    There's your silver lining :)
I'd imagine if it was a certain other airline they'd have hung ya by the small print.

Your total allowance is 20 kg regardless of how many bags you have. Anything over that is charged per kg as excess baggage.

And that's where you would be wrong. With the certain other airline, booking a second bag gives you an additional allowance of 15kg. Your first bag is 15kg or 20kg, depending on which one your choose. The second one is 15kg. So Ryanair are actually offering you a fairer deal.

So my point where Ryanair would never change their fine print to help out a customer is wrong. I'm sorry about that, I've just never had examples of it but I have experienced AerLingus helping out where they didn't need to (or could have charged me a fortune) and the OPs point where they could have screwed him (more) but didn't is another one. I'm sorry I mentioned it now.

I think most people would understand that Ryanairs terms and conditions might be different to AerLingus.

Edit: the OP was in the airport and I'm guessing not 4 hours prior to departure when he checked his second bag in so the price would have been €70 with Ryanair for the second bag and the first bag would have had a 15Kg limit. As he had 31Kg he would have had to pay another €20 for that extra Kg. Of course he could have planned it better, but I'm just going on his original post and I'm only going by the Ryanair site. Maybe the person at the desk would have helped him out and just charged him €75 also.

Sure, you are right that they would likely hold you to the fine print, 100%. But they actually did change the fine print at some point last year (from no extra allowance to 15kg extra allowance) without making a marketing stunt out of it. They just quietly did something that benefits many of their customers. So they are not that evil sometimes :).

Moral of the story is for all airlines read the fine print and do the sums. You nearly need a spreadsheet these days to figure the stuff out but it's all there on the websites (in the small links) so we can't plead ignorance :D

For the specific case of luggage, Aer Lingus versus Ryanair, I did the math earlier this year. I have not double-checked since whether the terms are still the same but for reference, here is the post.
