Employment contract law?

I'm not 100% sure if this is the place to put this or not but...

Does anybody know what the law is regarding employee contracts? I started my current job (just on the tills - nothing professional) mid July of this year and was given a 3 month contract which I was told is just resigned every 3 months. 5 months later there's still no sign of another contract - which means I'm currently working outside of a contract. I'm getting concerned due to the fact that if I'm working outside of a contract, they don't need a reason to fire me.

I heard that there is a clause to protect the Employee in this though... Essentially that if you were working to a contract - and after the contract had expired, you kept working as per the same conditions as the contract - it was assumed were still on the contract and therefore couldn't be fired without due cause. Can anybody tell me if this is true?

    Thanks in advance
