Probably one more for the Instruments forum. I use a rack mounted rig, I've a 4x12 cab, and on top of that a rack with a few wireless bits, my Boss GT-Pro, and a Mackie Poweramp.

It works the same as any other amp, but you can get it to re-create any amp made in the last 30-40 years, and pretty much any effect too. There's a MIDI cable from that, which runs to my footboard, so I have real stomp boxes and expression/volume/wah pedals too.

Advantages? You don't need to buy anymore gear, ever. Everything's done either on the amp itself, or via software on a laptop. The software is fantastic, you drag and drop pedals into the effects chain, pick your amps, pick your cabs, eq, and you can choose to have cabinet emulation on your DI to the desk or not. Setup time is non-existent, one wire for power in, one to the footboard, one to the desk, and one to the 4x12. If you want to sound like Van Halen, or SRV, or Satriani, go to the users group website, download the required free patch, and upload it to the amp - simples.

Disadvantages? Not as easy sometimes to change the finer details of your setup in the middle of a song, and some people will argue that the amp simulation will never be as good as the real thing (I'd find them a damn close match). Awkward too sometimes, carrying around a 4/6 U rack, a cabinet, a footboard as opposed to say a combo and a pedal board. And programming sounds up from scratch can take a bit of time.
