EDIT: i mis read your post

I think you might be asked for NCT to insure, but i've never been asked.

Just get the NCT done when it needs to be done, if your insurance or tax is due before, your covered by the previous NCT & if they're due after your covered by getting it done in time.....if that makes sense.

neither ...the NCT goes by date of first registration :D

motor tax asks for valid insurance ...and some insurances ask for valid NCT

Just remember it's your responsibility to book your NCT, you will not get a reminder. It's due from the date of first registration of the vehicle so if it was registed in June it's due in June, you can get the test 6 months prior to the due date for the first NCT and it will still last for 2 years from the due date.

I'm open to correction but I remember reading on another thread that they still send a reminder for the first NCT but not subsequent ones.
Edit: couldn't find anything to back this up

Motor tax renewal asks for your NCT Cert and Expiration details.

A bit OT: Is it true that there is an allowance of a month after a used car is regstered here (after being imported from UK).

Not online it doesn't, just insurance details.

Sorry should have said, if you go in to the office to renew it, it asks for the details of your NCT

Not too sure they bother checking it tbh :)

five points for not having a valid nct. Just get it done when it. Due.

One of my cars has just been through its 3rd NCT. I got a reminder letter. Whether you get a reminder letter or not seems to be random. If your car has been off the road for 3 or more months then you definitely need to contact the NCTs, they will definitely not me contacting you. You can book the NCT for a few months before the due date if you wanted to, the due date being 4 years after the date of first registration of the car.

    From NCTS.ie
NCTS can issue your certificate up to six months early for a first time NCT and three months early for subsequent NCT tests

For those of you with imported cars e.g. if the car was first registered in the UK, (I know ALL cars are imported before any pedants pipe up!) then it is the date of first registration in that country that determines the NCT due date. My car was first registered on 23rd December 2002 in the UK but I imported it in March 2006. The NCT was due for me this month, passed despite it being -6.5 Celcuis when I arrived up at the test centre at 9am yesterday morning.
