I wanna be able to watch a few HD videos on my PS3. But problem is they're in .mkv format and the PS3 doesn't recognise that.

Would anyone know a good (and fast) way to convert these files to something that could be viewable on a PS3...?

PS. for anyone wondering, these are 720p format videos and so are smaller ones that I can transfer to my PS3 quickly using flash drives. Only problem is the PS3 doesn't recognise these files!!!

Why just not use Mplayer on the PS3? I use it constantly on Linux and it's the only player I know of that can play virtually any format. Of course, you will probably need Yellow Dog Linux installed.

    ^Huh?

What's Yellow Dog Linux? I've got a mac...

Yellow Dog is a Linux distro which once could run on the PS3. AFAIK, if your PS3 is up to date with software you won't be able to run an alternative OS anymore.
If there's a Mac equivalent to TVersity you could stream the movies to the PS3. TVersity transcodes video so that the PS3 can handle it. There should be a Mac app that can do the same.

There's two excellent apps called roadmovie and iflicks for converting

The video shouldn't need to be converted, PS3 supports H264 already. The audio might need to be converted if it is DTS (to AC3), im not sure if the PS3 supports DTS. But audio conversion is relatively quick. If it is AC3 already then you are good to go.

Then they just need to be remuxed into a container supported by the PS3. Which takes literally a couple of minutes.

On a Windows machine you'd use MKV2VOB. Havent a clue what you'd use on a MAC. Try the MAC forum.

for a Mac try Handbrake, not too sure if it will do the trick but a good open source app nonetheless.

MKV2VOB is actually pretty good. It's really fast too.
Too bad its only windows. I can borrow my sis's laptop and do it on that (which is what i've been doing lately). But its not for mac...

Does the Handbrake thing convert the file from MKV to another format or just the audio file? Because converting a ~2GB HD video file would take forever!!

Easiest option is to use TSMuxer.
    Mac Version available \/
    http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html

It basically re-packages your mkv/mp4 file as a more compatible m2ts format. No conversion really needed.
As Voodu mentioned though, you will have to confirm what audio codec was used in the original source file.

handbrake can convert the file from MKV to another format, but you should pay attention to its preset, and a little lack of stability.
As you are using Mac, I think you can pick iFunia video converter pro for Mac to have a try, it's a prefessional Mac multimedia software.
And maybe you need to check the types of files ur PS3 can be played

Why all that dance-around ? Use PS3 Media Server. Easy to install and use. ;)

Definately either Tversity or MKV2VOB. And since you're on a mac, Tversity:)
