My dear sweet old mas HDD/DVD recorder has finally packed in. Having spent so long weeing her off the VCR its a blow to say the least. I was going to go buy a new standard DVR, but they are asking the same money for the same sizes 3 years ago ! Plus the fact the digital switch-over is finally starting makes me think thats a bad plan. Question is, what is the best solution now ? Are there MPEG4 compatible DVRs about yet ? I have heard some TV's can record to USB drive, is this the way forward ? Any advice would be warmly received. ;)

    yes there are
you should get 5 Tv , one test channel and 10 radio today, and eventually 4HD + 6SD TV and 10 to 12 Radio.

See other threads. A UK "Freeview+ HD" (NOT "Freeview") such as Humax T2 HDR should work. There may be Irish certified PVRs early next year.

See other threads in this forum. Note that from May you will need two tuner "proper" PVR, there are single tuner "budget" PVR that use separate USB external Drive. They are not proper PVRs. Also MHEG5 will be important next year. Most of the "budget" PVRs don't do MHEG5.

There are TVs with USB recording, not as good as true PVR with dedicated disc.
