    Hello

I am due to complete a hdip in psychology this year (I previously studied business).

I was wondering would anyone know if you need a masters to do a phd if you have a hdip? Ie does hdip count as a masters and could you do a phd straight after finishing the hdip?

    Thanks very much

What PhD are you thinking of going for? What was your primary degree in? have you any experience in that area you hope to do your PhD in? A bit more info may go a long way;)

Thanks for getting back to me!

My primary degree was in Business and Sociology (BESS) and I am studying the hdip in psychology in UCD.

Hoping to do a research phd in an area like clinical psychology or positive psychology or some othe psychology thing (eg face perception)

    Cheers!

Right firstly I'm a psychoanalyst not a psychologist so I'm not as up on it as others would be. I have heard of people in the past going from the HDip to Clinical. However, they also had years of clinical experience as psychotherapists.

The lads will give you a better answer, but there is strong competition for the clinical Doc. Lads here have spoken of have two masters and voluntary experience and still getting binned.

But don't take my word on it see what the rest have to say, and ring the college and ask about it too. Hope that helps a bit, even if not a positive answer; however, if that is the road you want to take, you will get there by doing what you need to do. Best of luck with it.

Hi, it is possible to go into a research PhD from a PGDip. It really depends if you can find a supervisor who'll take you on. (The Researcher forum, also under Science, might help there.)

Clinical Psychology and Counselling Psychology are professional doctorates - they are taught, include clinical experience, and a research thesis - usually not as long as the research PhD one.

Yes there are two kinds of doctorates - to be an academic, you'll need a research PhD rather than a professional PhD.
