    Folks,

I know the E46 gave huge bother with their turbo's but did the E90's do the same? The E90's are the newer model - from 2005 on

    Thanks,
    Josh

I think anyone qualified to reply will know what an E90 is ;)

To say the E46 gave huge bother is not entirely true, the turbos were upgraded mid 2003 to a newer type which proved much more reliable, and most owners are now aware of the root cause of the problem in the first place, i.e. the breather valve that needs to be replaced every 50/60K miles. The 2002 and early 2003 early 150bhp ones did have a tendancy to pop though, largely due to clogged filters though.

I have not heard of many failures on the E90 however (since it uses the new vortex type breather) but like all turbo-charged cars, turbo failure is not unkown to happen.

I had my turbo replaced at the main dealer under warranty on my 06 320d SE, 12 months later the turbo went again, they refused to replace it as I went over due on the service. This is a cop out by the dealer, they are aware of turbo issues with the 320d models particularly on the higher torque cars. I had a mechanic look at the car and says he recons the problem has been there for a while and will put in a new oil line, bypassing the existing one as it may be blocked, and replace the turbo with a recon. The car is drivable and a whinning noise like a distant siren can be heard when the car is started and the accelerator is applied. I am getting it fixed next week. Est cost €1100, anyone else experience this issue? BMW quoted €2400,. I wouldn't trust them since they couldn't get it right last time. My mechanic recommends replacing engin oil at least every 6K miles.

It's not as bad as the 2002-2004 e46's, but the e90 does seem to eat ABS control units - a lot of the 1 Series and 3 Series from 05 onwards seem to have issues. So much so that when people freaked out about the 2k replacement costs, they brought out a kit for 300 which repairs the unit.

Don't get me started about BMW costs, I have a broken PDC sensor so this is the conversation:

Me: "I am looking for a rear PDC sensor"

    Some chassis numbers later

    BMW Dealer - "That's €161 + VAT, so about €200"
Me: "I only need the one"
    BMW Delaer - "That's each"
Me: "€800 for 4 sensors, but the OEM retrofit kit is only €300"
BMW "Meah - that's what they cost"
    Me: "Thank you - goodbye"

€35 ordered me one a refurbed from flea-bay

If your buying bmw e90,either get one with low miles, which will be very costly or buy one at 100.000miles with the turbo replaced.
the turbo is sure to go on these cars at 100.000miles.
make sure there is service history!!

A bit odd dragging up an old thread but turbos do not implode at xx mileage. They can go at any mileage if not maintained properly, ie oil and breather filters not changed regularly, wrong grade of oil used, etc. Letting the engine tick over for a few mins before switching it off helps the oil seals too. Plenty of information out there on them, people just need to do a little bit of research.
