Am currently considering upgrading my Gaggia classic to the Rancillio Silvia. Is it worth the cash? Are there any other machines I chould consider for arpund the same money?

    Thanks,
    Joe

Yes, that's the set up I'm currently using and this is what I'm considering upgrading to.

Is it worth the extra cash? Are there any other machines I should consider ?

    Thanks.

I have a silvia but never used a gaggia so I cannot compare.

However, I can tell you good quality fresh beans (not the stuff you buy in supermarkets) and a very good grinder make all the difference.

I get beanas from hasbean.co.uk and jamesgourmetcoffee.com and use a mahlkonig vario grinder.

So if I was you I would spend the extra cash on a grinder, or maybe you already have a good one?

Thanks qwytre. Already have decent grinder, Gaggia MDF & am fairly fussy about the beans I use. Just considering taking a step up on hardware!

Well I have no complaints about the silvia anyways after using it for 6 months.

I just wonder will it make much of a difference compared to a gaggia. They both just put pressurised hot water through the ground beans, eh? :)

To me its all about the freshness of the beans and the quality of the grind.

Some people say to get your machine tweaked so that it puts water out a lower pressure compared to the factor setting but thats all a bit too geeky for me.

Good luck with the silvia if you choose to go for it.

We've had a tweaked (adjusted pressure, PID'd, bottomless portafilter) Silvia for a couple of years. Have to say it's well capable of producing excellent coffee - the only fly in the ointment being operator error. Dunno about comparisons with the Gaggia, but I'd recommend it on it's own merits. The tweaks (particularly the pressure change) do make a noticable difference though.
