    Hi,

Anyone any knowledge of these cars? I am selling my Alfa 156 as the electrics are taking the Mick in this cold weather... It's my daily knock about getting to work and back and I can't have this bullsh!te!

I am being offered a Irish 2000' Accord 1.8 SE VTEC from a friends Dad. I have had civics years ago when I was a teenager so it's been awhile since driving a Honda. What Bhp are these kicking out?

Specifically looking for issues with these particular cars... Whats the differance between these and the jap import versions?

Pretty annoyed I have to use my A6 in the snow as I don't want it getting knocks or dents in it:(

    Thanks

Think the 1.8 is about 130bhp. The SE had nice spec too, elec sunroof, a/c etc.

I've never heard of any issues with them. As long as it's been looked after should be no problem at all. Cousin has one and treats it like a dog and it's been as loyal and reliable as a dog too

I've no doubt it will be 100 times more reliable then the Alfa. Lovely looking cars those Accords I have to say:)

    Thanks

Brother has the 2 litre vtec version. A 2000 model. They're a very nice car. Comfortable, quick, nice drive & utterly faultless. If i was going to get an older 1.8/2.0 petrol car it would be a vtec accord. Especially if you get one with leather seats. Nice.

I had an 02 1.8. Fantastic car and built like a tank. 138 BHP if I remember correctly. Really comfortable. That was the first of the VTEC Accords I think and they revved right up to the limiter. Bit heavy on petrol though - 35 mpg on a good trip.

Had one myself was an auto with the 1.8vtec and very good, suspension is one of the best I've ever driven, cornered like it was on rails, make sure its well serviced with TB change. They're a bit cramped up front, as is space in the back. The boot is very big though.

Actually was a toss between a 1.8 156 estate and an accord and the accord won hands down in everything for us, its a seriously good car.

Everything worked all of the time completely over engineered.! which is a good thing.

Very comfortable car, doesnt cost too much to run (relatively speaking; it is a 1.8 tho!), nice little kick off the VTEC at about 4500 revs if I remember correctly (nothing like a DOHC VTEC but noticable all the same), quick enough. No problems in the snow or ice. Bulletproof; never gave me a minutes trouble. I went from a 1.4 Civic to my Accord and there is such a step up in terms of comfort, power and general standard of car its not even funny.

I would go back to my 99 Accord in the morning, no hesitation. Only reason I sold mine was to fund me buying a Type R Integra, other than that I would have driven it until it literally stopped (which would probably be many years down the way!). If the car you are being offered is clean and well looked after then I would grab it with both hands.

There is a nice little kick from that model around 4000 revs alright (although it was a bit sluggish below that). That was evened out over the following model but I actually missed it. I changed to the current model Civic saloon 1.8 VTEC and always regretted it. Ended up going back to the Accord(2006 model in diesel) as I missed the "weightly" feel of the Accord.

As you say, that model was smaller than the subsequest models and was probably about the same size as the Civic saloon (current model) but such a difference in class!

I had a 00 2L V-Tec auto for a while, and as previously said, utterly faultless mechanically. I did find the rear to be a wee bit cramped for the sector of car, but then i wasn't spending any time in the back. I was averaging late 20s to mid 30s mpg. The one i had was a 1 owner, well cared for example. Water pump had been changed at 67K (i bought it with 70k), and possibly the TB was done as well.

I always give them a second look if i see one on the road, i always thought they were an attractive car.
I'd have one again in a shot

I actually did spent quite a bit of time asleep on the back seat of my Accord on my lunchbreak from work and found it to be very comfortable :D

My sister has a '99 1.8 Accord and is somewhere up around 190k miles now. The car was always main dealer serviced for the first 100k miles and is well looked after now with regular oil changes and yearly servicing(every 6 months getting an oil change - but not main dealer servicing)

Generally well built and no big bills so far, fuel economy is averaging mid to late 30's

haha nice one...they are a very comfortable car alright, though i have to say i never gave mine the thorough roadtest you describe above ;)

    I drive a 1999 2.2 Type R Accord, and can't fault it really.

Very comfortable, very quick, pulls all the way up to 8.5k rpm, although zero torque.

Although very comfortable, nice and smooth and no rattles whatsoever, and mine has done 115k miles.

Bulletproof engines, provided they've been regularly serviced, especially oil changed.

Actually, the only gripe I have with it, is the back seats don't fold down, leaving you with just your boot space, and no possiblity of increasing that.

I think they adressed this with the facelifted model (2001) though? Mine definitely had back seats that folded down.

Ah did they, good to hear. That to me is a design fault really I think.

The boot is nice and big (coming from a 200sx!), but that really let it down methinks.

There's a pretty good overview/owner's review here that I stumbled across a while back.

Edit: although he seems a bit biased against VTEC engines in general at the end. I'd ignore those comments until you've driven one.

I sort of the get the impression from that article that he is expecting the engine to be a DOHC. Its not, and for a a SOHC engine its nowhere near as underpowered or sluggish as he is making it out to be (having to change down gears to get up a hill, wtf; was he climbing Everest vertically or something?). I somewhat get the impression he has been influenced a little too much by the Jeremy Clarkson "I hate Honda Accords" attitude...

Agree totally, he comes across as a grumpy old git, makes me wonder why he bought the car.

Once you get used to VTEC, and I'm new to it myself, there's plenty of power. I find the 2.0 sohc VTEC totally addictive, it has a splendid throaty growl.

Isn't the iVTEC system in the likes of the standard Civic, Accord, etc a different design to the DOHC VTEC system you find in Type R models though?

Yes, not sure of the specifics, but the Type R is definitely dohc, and produces about 200 bhp versus the 150 of the variant in the current Accord/CR-V. But even the sohc i-VTEC, which doesn't have the classic VTEC kick, is a great engine imo, much sportier sounding and more fun to drive than I expected.

    Good overview of it here.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going for a spin in it later after work:D..Theres 115k on the clock though but I'm not worrying about it at all. I had civics with well over 140k on the clock that had zero issues relating to emissions. Been a looong time since driving a VTEC. My last Honda was a 92' 1.5vti jap import civic back in 98. That had a 1.5 SOHC VTEC which was in around 120bhp from what I remember. Anyways I'm not looking to gun it around the place just because this accord is a VTEC. Nice to know though it will probably have abit of over taking power when I need it.

Cannot go wrong with an Accord of that era to be fair. A bit smaller than the previous model and they were built in Swindon, UK. They didn't share any body parts with the JDM Accord at the time and the hatchback version was a UK sold model only so any you see here were imported. 1.8 litre had decent enough performance for it's size at the time.

I'd aim for an SE or Executive spec model. Executive model had almost everything as standard including electric heated seats with memory settings. Think it was only available in 2.0 litre form though.

I thought was just the head lights and tail lights which were differant on the jap ones. Interiors look the same though....

This was the JDM Accord at the time:

Sold up to 2002. Styling is a bit similar to the Accord we got in Europe but shared no body parts.

I can see now they are differant if a little similar. I bought the car anyways. Just about got home with it, the snow is unreal. Couldn't test out the Vtec on a stretch though but I'm sure it's fine. It's a well minded car anyways, very comfy to :). I'll wait until after xmas and put the Alfa up for sale... It's a pitty their so problematic as their such a nice looking car but what can you do...

The european accord is very much.... europeanised in design?? I prefer it to the JDM version. The JDM accord is a very standard looking boxy saloon. A bit characterless really.

The US made Accord was bigger but blander:

I have a December 98 1.8 Accord, and discovered by accident the last day that the rear seats do indeed fold down. There are 2 small yellow release straps you can only see looking in from the boot. Very handy but easy to miss.

Most reliable car I ever had without doubt.

Thanks for the heads up, but must be the older model. Checked, and I don't have them.

    Very nice.

actually its the same model as mine, which came out in about October/November 98. All I can think of is that the Type R is either made in a different factory to the more vanilla versions, or maybe it could be something as simple as having different rear seats. I imagine the Type R has very sporty seats front and back.

Same shape and colour as mine, except mine doesn't have that Airbus A380 wing attached to the bootlid :D

Ya that must be it so, the R has full Recaro Interior, this is it:

:D Ya it's a bit love it/hate it spoiler. I despoilered it, but it just didn't look right, so she's staying on.

(For those that don't know, that's how the Type R left the factory)

That spoiler was only standard on the Type R Accord. About 99% of Accords wouldn't have it.
