Something similar happened to a society partner of my Dad about 10 years ago. He was standing to the side of a tee box, waiting for another group of people whose fairways crossed to tee off, when one of the other group caught the ball with the driver right off the edge of the face. The ball flew towards my Dad's partner and caught him on the very edge of his eye socket. The impact caused bone splinters to rupture his eye ball internally and he permanently lost sight in that eye. I don't know what happened afterwards, with regards to any compensation or anything like that.

It's a story I'll never forget and if I'm ever near someone hitting a shot, will always look away from the ball, making sure my eyes are not exposed. Bones can heal but your eyes may not.
