    Hi,

Does anyone know if the cold water feed to the hot water tank comes from the tank in the attic or from the mains feed. It's a new house with gas central heating.

    Thanks
    Gx

it should be from the tank in the attic unless its a pressurised system, take a photo of the hot water tank and we can tell you which it is..

The 3rd pipe from the left at the back wall is the feed from the mains up into the tank in the attic. The 2nd pipe from the left is connected to this pipe (just above picture view) and comes back down and connects into the cylinder.

My problem is that the mains feed from below is frozen so I've filled the attic tank manually with a hose but I still have no hot water. I had thought that the attic tank feeds the cylinder.

If you're tank ran dry then its most likely that you have an airlock. Search this forum and you will find instructions on how to clear it.

Thanks for the tip...I had a read of the other posts but not sure which pipe to open. Would this picture indicate where to vent the airlock.

The 2nd pipe goes down into the hot cylinder, the third pipe is the supply to the attic tank.

    Thanks

No, they're heating pipes, not related to the hot water.

The easiest thing to do is to try to blast mains pressure water up the cold pipe to clear the blockage. If you could plumb them in, that would be easiest.

If not, then there are a few ways to do it.

Firstly, make sure that the tank in the attic is full.

Is it a mixer tap in the kitchen sink?

If its a mixer, hold you're hand over the spout tightly so as not to let water through. Turn on the hot, and then the cold. If the cold can travel up the hot, then you should be able to successfully block most of the water coming out of the tap. Hos this on for about two minutes, and then take hand away, and the turn off cold tap. The hot should gurgle and some water should come out.

Great mate thanks that worked a treat. I have hot water again...it gurgled a bit and then came back fully.

Now I just have to wait for my mains feed to the attic to thaw out, not sure how it froze inside the house as the kitchen sink tap is flowing freely.

    Thanks again

Its most likely frozen where it goes up the wall somewhere, past the kitchen.

I have no hot or cold water in the bathroom both the shower toilet and sink don't work. The tap in the kitchen gives us cold water but nothing out of the hot tap. The big tank in the attic is empty but there is a small tank over that which is full with pieces of ice in it. Our main source of heat is a stove in the kitchen which also heats the water. Would it be safe to light the stove as i don't know if the hot water tank has water in it? Could you help please? Thanks.

Leave attic door open to help thaw out attic pipes. You have a frozen mains feed to attic tank probably. Just like i had yesterday.
