here is a link to an image of a finish hallmark. I know what JVA the crown and 813 mark is but not sure of the other two. It is an E with possibly russian cryllic beside and the a capital W.

I have a feeling the W is an american import mark but still not sure what the E. something is.

    any help would be great.

I forgot to mention this is a Faberge item also=)

what i'm trying to understand is why this item has both faberge and other hallmarks/ stamps such as the ones in the image above.

When you open item up the Faberge stamps are at the bottom and the finnish stamps are at the top of item. The faberge stamps are quite worn where the other stamps are not as bad.

The E is a date mark apparently .

    Hi will,

Yeah i managed to find that the mark is E5 for 1910.

I was reading alot about fakes. I hope this is not a fake.

trying to get a professional to take a look at it.

Oh yeah , there's plenty of fakes doing the rounds .
And they are really good quality copies too .

I can hardly tell the difference myself to be honest .

I notice on one of the images , there is a tarnish mark from a rubber band which bound the case , I only notice it on one side though , Its not something that would be included in a fake . Unless of course the band was holding a number of these cases together .
With reference to this , I wonder how the 'jeweled' thumb clasp is ? still functional or repaired ?
why was the rubber band needed I wonder .

I had to research a St Petersberg ciggie case last year , and only for the provenence I couldnt have said for certain whether it was fake or genuine .

With all the Russian wealth these days , the forgers are working top quality replicas and genuine silver examples later struck with fake marks, and the enamels are another area to be extremely wary .
And if you think the Russian fakes are good , you must have a look at the oriental ceramic forgeries these days .
Forgers follow the money , and the Irish art market was no exception .

So , back to your case . You got to look for areas of natural wear , and if possible familiarise yourself with authentic examples .
Easier said than done if you live in Ireland !!!

If you found it on Ebay , at a 'bargain' price then its most likely a dud .

Can you share with us how you came across the item ?

    Hi again,

It turns out from the very smart people at 925.com that the Faberge marks are indeed very bad fake stamp marks. lol

The funny thing is the Finnish marks are all genuine. And it is real gold and silver with saphire stone.

The maker of the case was in fact johan aarne a Faberge master who clocked around 15 or more years with Faberge.

He made the case in 1910 (5 years after leaving Faberge to start his own shop)

I am happy the case was made by such a skilled silver and goldsmith but of course disappointed with the fake Faberge mark. In many ways though the item is as good as any Faberge considering it is the quality of the maker not the brand.

I know it was bought at a state auction in the U.S a few years ago by someone i know and i then eventually managed to get my hands on it for a price of 800euro only recently thinking it was a real Faberge.

Now i must get it valuated to see what it is worth considering the new information.I hope i did not lose money:o
