I thought this was going to be a rant about a problem with the roof of the swimming pool building or something :pac:

Anyway, the entire university's closed until January 4th, so I suppose you're just going to have to put up with it until then.

although i dont use the pool or any other recreational facilities the amount of the time the library and other resources close over the christmas is a bit crazy, most people that work dont get that much time off, so why should a university, especially considering exams are straight after christmas.

most people would be happy to just not have to work stephens day nevermind the best part of two and a half weeks off.

To be fair now, there's **** all we could have done about it if it was the college who said close up the pool for the day. Our staff have literally risked life and limb to get to the pool on ****e roads for the past few weeks - one of our colleagues even ended up in a ditch trying to get to work last Saturday. And, FYI, we still kept the pool open as much and as often as we could during the bad weather.

Nice to see this is the thanks we get

We're back on th 4th of January, by the way. Looking forward to seeing you all then!

Yeah, I was going to take the bait, but I had a look at your contributions on other threads and I've decided I won't get into an argument with you because it just isn't worth my time. I will say this, however, and that is - you think we liked earning less money because the snow made the college close? No. In fact it was an utter pain in the proverbial arse. I lost a third of my week's wages because of the last close. Not that you appear to have the capacity to care about such trivialities affecting other people...

We don't earn anything, nothing, while the pool is closed. So it's better for us if it's open. But if the college says close, then again there's sweet **** all we can do about it.

    Happy Christmas.

to be honest i dont have a part time job at the moment, it would be a big help towards my studies if i did. if people can show up at the pool to use it during the bad weather im sure your staff can too, otherwise you should consider hiring new staff, competent ones

    regards

I had a full-time job through 1st year and again through 2nd year (financial situation demanded it) and I had to spend Christmas day with a housemate from Mayo in our house in Maynooth because travel was so bad.

It's not about competence. The University is shut down for Christmas. It shut down 48 hours early because so much snow fell in a short space of time - 4 inches in a few hours - with no sign of it stopping. Could have been much worse in another few hours, there was no way of knowing. So they stayed on the right side of caution.

Maynooth traffic is pretty bad at the best of times. I don't know if you realised how bad it got during the snow. Most of the uni staff, being paid staff, would *drive* to work and, with the trains and buses gone to hell, even more would have driven.

And then you have safety risks on campus. Believe it or not, Ireland's limited number of gritters find themselves in high demand during periods of surprise, unprecedented snowfall. I was walking around campus that Monday and it was damned near impossible to get from a to b.

But yeah, the pool had to close 48 hours early. Heads must roll!

    /sigh

Yup. 38 hour week. 1st year was fine, 2nd was easily the worst of my life! I'm not complaining, I chose to do it and knew what it would be like. Was either that or not go to college. My circumstances were unusual though.

Looks like I'm not the only one unhappy with frequent closures.

Could they not even have a system where members have a key or something?

We didn't even close 48 hours early. We were open on Tuesday evening as well. We were meant to be open on Wednesday as well, but as I've said twice now, it wasn't up to our staff to decide whether they *wanted* to work or not, because the college closed early due to bad weather.

I find the accusations of incompetence irksome and not only that, they are totally unfounded. I also think "Paky" is a bit of a wind-up merchant. Seriously Paky, do you not have anything better to be doing other than insulting college/swimming pool staff over the holidays?

Oh no wait, the swimming pool and gym are closed until 4th January. I guess you don't.

I'm sorry but this won't end well, and I've had enough of it.
