My partner has no direct experience in retail but saw this job; http://herlihycentra.ie/html/careers.html and wondered if she would be able to use her experience in event management. How important is having retail experience? She has 6 years in event management.

Retail experience means knowing how to use a till, having some awareness of stock ordering/putting out stock etc and coping well under pressure/large queues etc. And other things, not relevant to a Centra. So I'd imagine Event Management would be useful for some aspects but they will take someone who has a few years in shop over her I would imagine.

Tell her to apply anyway. Nothing to lose, and they might like her maturity.

Any monkey can be trained to use a till and order stock, but people management is a lot harder to train and IMHO a lot more important in a role like that.

Thanks, Yeah I told her to try anyway as she has accountancy experience that they might like.

Make sure she asks what the working week is and how long the shifts are. Her rota could be 3 earlys and 2 lates and most Sundays 5 over 7 and 45 hour week.

I know yeah but some retailers put a lot of store by it and some are discouraged from taking on highly-qualified people.
