Excuse my ignorance on all things relating to plumbing and heating. We have no hot water in our taps, cold water yes. Is it safe to turn on the heating? My son sleeps in a dormer and said the heating was not on in his room even though it heated the rads downstairs. Any advice will be appreciated.

I just asked that question a while ago and seemingly, you can leave it on provided there is water in the tank in the attic.

My electric shower wouldn't work this morning but I have water at sink from mains but I am afraid to flush a loo just in case!!!

What if water in the tank is frozen?

Yes, it should be ok to have on. Have you had this issue with the heating in the dormer only recently?

Sounds like you have a mains fed shower and the water is frozen going up the wall of the house. Check and see if you're tank in the attic is full, as its likely that its not filling and will empty soon.

Only yesterday the dormer did not heat. How could all the water from the tank be emptying if i am not using the hot water taps? What will happen if the tank empties?

Cold water in the bathroom, shower and filling the cistern will drain the tank if the mains is frozen

As long as you have some water in the attic tank , it is okay to run your heating.

sounds like your tank froze and now that rad is air-locked,you will have to vent those rads, you would not have water in your bathroom taps if your tank is frozen, probably froze over-night and then air-locked! my boyfriends a plumber

also sounds like your shower is air-locked too,be very careful not to leave it run,as u could burn out the motor!
