Need a bit more info there my friend?

What field are you working in? What level are you working at (staff, supervisor, team leader, middle management, senior management board member etc)?

What part of the UK are you thinking of?

Looking for a hands on Role in electrical engineering. Thinking of London or around the Gatwick area.

I'm not currently there but am due to start in July in London on a graduate programme. I found it easy enough to find work, the situation doesn't seem to be as bleak over there

If you're a public sector worker it's bleak, a lot more bleak than in Ireland. Over here (England) they're not afraid to just cut public sector jobs.

I don't know anything about electrical engineering but you could get an idea by looking at various UK job sites and specialist recruiters.

Remember however that while UK tax appears to be lower than in Ireland you have to pay council tax as well as income tax and national insurance. Also diesel is far more expensive than in Ireland (if you drive a diesel), and there's no rent relief and no mortgage interest relief. Sure the doctor is free but you kind of hope not to have to use them :D The cost of living varies a lot too, it's much cheaper to live in the North of England than the South and therefore salaries appear to be higher down South when in reality the cost of living might totally negate the extra income.

Also commuting by train is hugely expensive. Five years ago my monthly ticket from Cambridge to London was £313 a month. It's gone up a huge amount since then and increases each year.

Take that into account when looking at salaries.

    What kind of graduate programme?

Anyone know if its possible to look for work over there from Ireland or should you chance it and move over first before you go sending out CVs, Im talking about pharma/biotech industry here.

    Send your CV.

Definitely look at Cambridge as there's a lot of Science parks here, Cambridge Science Park, Granta Park, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, European Bioinformatics Institute, Addenbrooke's hospital etc.

Look at New Scientist online for jobs in science as well as regular job sites. PM me with your particular field of interest and experience (no need for CV just general info) and I might be able to point you in the direction of various companies in Cambridge. Not actually get you an inside track or anything just point you in the right direction. Who knows? :)

    For an investment bank.

My sector is different to yours but I am living in Ireland (still in college). I emailed my CV to the campus recruiter then went over to London twice: first for an open day in the company and then for a final round assessment day. Did the assessment day on a Tuesday and got the offer on the Wednesday
