Taxing a car - no insurance document

    Hi Lads,

I have a car that I have not been using, and I'm going to sell it on.
Car is registered in my name, but has not been taxed for some time as it has genuinely not been on the road. I intend to get a declaration witnessed by a garda.

I was hoping to stick 3 months tax on it as a sweetener to help a sale. Question is - Can I tax it without it being insured?
(Answer is probably no, I would expect)

If I transfer my insurance cover on a temp basis can I tax it?

Or, do I have to produce an insuance cert at the tax office?
(in which case, I could'nt be bothered, and I will leave taxing it)

    TIA!

Why tax a car that you might not sell for 3 months ?

If you buy tax online you can put in the policy number of your other car or make one up.

These details are not checked against a database. It was highlighted nearly two years ago and nothing has been done about it.

It seems like a lot of hassle and messing about if you are selling it. The new buyer only needs to tax it from the month the VLC is transferred to them so it makes no sense.

I taxed my car this morning, just had the policy number written down, they didn't ask for cert. USe your policy number from another car.

I taxed a car for similar reasons a couple of years ago & rang the nice chaps in Shannon who told me to just explain the problem when I got to the tax office. Had no issue getting it taxed.

My view would be "Don't bother yer hole taxing it".......... :)

Tell whoever views the car you'll give them 3 months tax equiv in cash back for the asking price.
So, you let them tax it, you get the asking price, you have a good selling proposition (put **with free road tax** in the title line of any ads to drive clicks and interest) you save hassle or run the risk of taxing a car and the tax running out if you struggle to shift it.

    GLWTS and happy xmas!

    This.

I taxed the wife's car online last week. Didn't have her insurance details to hand at the time so just made one up.....tax cert arrived a couple of days ago. :)

shure why would'nt it. They don't give a toss as long as you're taxing it.

Why do they even bother with this rigmarole anymoe ? Doesnt the requirement to display Insurance "discs" (theyre called "discs" even though theyre square. Who the hell came up with that one) make the requirement to produce insurance certs when taxing a car even more pointless than it was before ?

Is it an offence to keep a public vehicle on the road (as opposed to actually driving it) without insurance ? How does requiring the production of insurance certs prevent someone taxing a car for a year with an insurance certificate due to expire in two days ?
