why did Tom Hands talk to "Winston", a soccer ball in Cast Away

Its unusual. He aws stranded for a couple of years and found a soccer ball, put some coconut "hair" on top of a it and gave it a face. Then labelled it/him "Winston" and talked to it. Why did he do this?

It was a Wilson brand volleyball. He talked to it so he wouldnt forget how to speak. He got the idea because his bloody handprint looked like a face.
