Question re Weight

I'm sure a few of you have experienced the same, so thought i'd ask. I got a small niggle in my foot 2 weeks ago and havent trained since. In that time i've dropped a 2-3lbs, and this has happened in similar situations before.

I know there are many variables but I havent noticed myself eating less, in fact i had my xmas party last friday and ate loads and had good few beers.

Thing is im not sure why, is it my body carrying less water because im not training or is it loss of muscle mass?

In the past i've found it will come back over time.

The reason I ask is I have a good handle on what my weight is on any particular day after a particular type of run, as i weigh myself twice daily - mainly as i use this to ensure i hydrate properly as i use to be terrible at doing same.

Be interested to hear others thoughts

I would always have assumed it was down to a loss of muscle mass.

I'd be interested to hear what people think of the water retention theory or any other possible explanations.

I haven't come across this before - not running but also losing weight. Are you doing any other exercise while you can't run? I can maintain my weight pretty well even when injured, but I find I either have to cross train or cut down on what I eat. And you say you are still eating the same.
Water retention is possible, but I would have thought that it would even out over time? Muscle loss could possibly be a factor, but I can't imagine you would loss 2 or 3 pounds in just a couple of weeks.
Interested in finding out what's going on here!

I've had a similar experience kennyb3 - being injured I've lost 2 lbs since DCM - it's not much, but I thought I would pile on the lbs, so I was quite surprised. I think myself, it's a loss of muscle. But as Killmurf said, you are only out of action 2 weeks, would you loose muscle that quickly?

Hope your foot is on the mend, and you are back training again soon.

Yeah does seem quite quick. Must be muscle mass and/or slightly less food or water.

I'm the opposite I'm afraid, when not running I tend to indulge a little as I deprive myself throughout the year, so a couple of glasses of wine mid-week leads to cheese and crackers, etc.

Your body weight can vary by anything up to 4lbs over the course of a week depending on how hydrated/dehydrated you are.

Well I put on about 2lbs a week if I miss training, on week 3 without getting good training in and up 6lbs already, don't eat any more while not training but its a pure pain in the head.

You naturally flactuate anything up to a half stone. You said though that you weigh daily? So if you always have accurate readings (1st thing in morning after you've weed etc is best teller) and now have gone down 2lbs and stayed there, then yeah you prob lost it.

When i got injured in jan before i could cross train i lost weight and was baffled but then realised that i was in a way subconsciously cutting back in certain areas food wise and it turned out my overall cals were lower hence the weight loss. It was when i was cross training that i actually gained weight as i started eating like a horse again but was training less than i had been when i was running!

Maybe get your BMR and use the likes if Fitday and see how many cals you're getting in daily for a week or two and you may see where you are falling on and that you maybe below maintenance cals.

Thanks UL, as i said i weigh myself regular so am well aware of the hydration and food in gut issue (as mentioned by poster above) and know where i should be on a monday after weekend compared to a friday (eating less during the week being in the office all day).

As you say i know i ve cut food back a bit but i didnt think this would even cover the 500kcal's a day i was going through running.

I should prob look at getting my body fat measured at some stage so i can keep an eye on it more

Google the Hackers Diet. Some of it is tosh but he does provide a spreadsheet that you can log your daily weight in . It then does a trand analysis of your weight so that you can see whether, over time, you are actually gaining/losing.
