ebay purchase: Item not received

Hi folks, I purchased two (expensive) pairs of sunglasses as a christmas pressie for the missus from ebay on 21st November. The glasses were sent from Italy with a tracking number, but I declined to purchased insurance as it was almost 10% of the sale price. The glasses have still not arrived and when I enter the tracking number on the Italian post website, it gives

"Information not yet available. Check the accuracy of the data and try your search again later or contact the post office" everytime.

I should mention the seller has nearly 99.6% positive feedback with nearly 1000 sales. I recently lodged an "item not received" complaint with paypal. However, the seller has decided to escalate it to a claim(?) and he has provided paypal with the tracking details. It really sounds to me like the glasses have been stolen somewhere in the postal system. Can I safely assume the onus is on the seller to provide proof the glasses have been delivered and is it likely I will get a refund?

    Yes, they must prove delivery.

Italy is scam central though, just like Nigeria.

Agreed... Italy is one place I avoid on eBay. Even if they do show up they could turn out to be fakes.

If the seller is Italian, no they will only have to provide proof of postage.

OP will be in trouble, if that's the case.

Thanks for the replies folks. It occurred to me earlier to put the Italia poste tracking number into the anpost website and lo and behold the glasses took a tour around the country before departing Portlaoise mail centre on Dec. 7th (presumably a return to sender job). My guess is the shipping label on the parcel was incomprehensible, even though the seller confirmed my address with me. Oh well, hopefully I will get refunded and the seller gets their merchandise back.

Aside from your issue I would say it's just too risky buying designer sunglasses from eBay. There are just too many fakes.

Risking the health of your eyes is crazy.
