    Hi,
planning on buying iphone 4 in the next week or so, gonna go for the 16gb, was going to buy direct from a network but now i think i will buy from apple themselves as it will be unlocked and i can choose my network then and i will also be spending 6 months in america next year so i could use one of their networks as the phone will be unlocked.
is this a wise decision as opposed to going through the process of getting it unlocked and jailbroken etc after buying from network provider?

I have looked through the different networks and I think vodafone seems the best value for me. for 30eur a month i get free texts to all networks, and unlimited internet. i am spending between 35 and 40 a month with meteor pay as you.

Could I just have opinions on buying direct from apple and which networks please?

You have said yourself the best reason for buying from Apple, plus its cheaper.

have a trawl back a few pages or use the search for which provider, its asked about 3 times a week.

you might want to read the terms and conditions on vodafone's "unlimited" internet. Its unlimited but capped at 250mb per month. So really its terrible!

AFAIK only AT&T are allowed operate iPhone in the USA and that is on contract plus apple does not sell them unlocked.

    Incorrect.

AT&T are the only US carrier selling the iPhone. It will work, however, with any GSM network worldwide. Also, Apple have sold them unlocked for a good while.

OP: In my opinion, your best bet is to get it direct from Apple as it is only ~€20 more and it will be factory unlocked.

As for the network to chose, it depends on your usage. Personally, I am with Vodafone PAYG: €20 a month for free texts to any network (can be free calls and texts to vodafone if that's your thing) and 39c a day for 100mb a day data. Data works out about €12 a mounth for 3GB. By far the best value data of any network!

    Three have a deal where you get a free iphone with trade in etc;

You may or may not be able to unlock the phone legitimately, with three?

Will the other US networks provide a microsim ? iPhone is the only phone I know of that uses it. If not then you will have to do a DIY job. Also not sure how data will workout for you on PAYG. Will a network do a 6 month only contract ?

Also, Apple have sold them unlocked for a good while.

I was referring to apple USA.

I presume they would; Meteor do micro sims and they do not stock the iPhone.

I wouldn't say they would do a 6 month contract tho, it would have to be PAYG. Could be wrong tho.

ok i want to buy one ( iphone 4) just from apple no network .... pay the extreme price of 600 euro or whatever...

Could someone tell what i will need to know, will i have any trouble updating it or using anything on it?? or is it just like using any old phone that is not connected to any network.

    Have many people done this?

I plan on using my meteor sim card

You need a meteor micro sim.

I would wait until the new one comes out, or buy from Adverts.ie (make sure its sim free / factory unlocked). But if Apple.ie makes u feel more secure. Go for it. Couldn't be simpler.
