Scrap or repair Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk IV

Need some advice if someone could help.

Bought the car two years ago its an 01 and have had a lot of trouble with it. Various mechanic diagnosed brake problems replaced the brake pads and discs around 5 times in 2 years- I only drive to work and back 10km so no reason for the wear.

Anyway yesterday I finally bit the bullet and brought it to a Volkswagen dealer who has diagnosed its the bearings and the flanges in the wheel, that it was in an accident before I bought it so that damaged it. It also needs a service

Cost of repairing the bearings, flanges, the brakes and the service 1000 euro:eek:
The car is only worth about 2-3K but I probably cant sell it like this anyway.

Should I just buy something else or else pour this 1K into the car which was in an accident ? It does have low mileage but I've had other troubles such as turbo needs doing etc ?

Was thinking of the scrappage deal but not sure if its a good idea, I've tried to get finance from AIB but they've refused me, is it easier at a dealer?

    Thanks for the help

1000 in a main dealer would work out at about 500-600 at a good indy mechanic

The problem has been diagnosed, surely you could bring it to a private mechanic and have the work done considerably cheaper.

VW main dealer parts and labour are scandalous.

    EDIT
    Sean1141 beat me to it.

I'd start by scrapping your current mechanic.

Anyone got a recommendation for a good indy mechanic ?

The last guy I've been going to didnt manage to diagnose the problem just kept replacing the brakes.

My other reservation is that if it turns out to be something else -not the bearings then I still have the same problem but no comeback as I would at the VW dealer who are convinced its the problem?

if vw dealer dose the work he thinks is causing the problem and that dose not solve it you will still have to pay them. you wont have any more comeback than you will at any other mechanic! what part of the country are you in?? i know a great vw mechanic in laois.

And that is true Sean they did say if its not that probably try something else...

Will I have to pay them for labour to diagnose the problem if i dont get them to do the work, I havent collected it yet?

ya they will have to be paid for looking at the car. its only fair. just make sure they dont go ahead and do the work without asking you.. tell them you dont have the money to repair it at this time. then take it to another mechanic and see if they come up with the same problem..

Is that price mostly labour or parts?

If the new parts are a significant part of it, you could probably buy whole wheel assembly from a breaker for small money

WTF kinda mechanic replaces the disks 5 times, i mean how much head scratching did he do? my shogun has 188 thousand miles with the original brake discs, so if a set didnt last you 10000 miles you wouldn't repeat 5 times

If you got refused finance, I wouldn't be rushing into other options. Maybe cut your cloth.

Sounds like a money pit. Unless you love the car, I don't think I'd keep it.

The problem with sporty cars like GTI's is they are often crashed and repaired. When I was looking for one many years ago, (MkII) about 9/10 had been crashed and repaired.

That said if if something you really love, then its going to cost you.

It was two different mechanics, Ist time for both mechanics claimed it was wear and tear from braking too aggressively, my brother drove it a couple of times(he drives like a lunatic) so I wasnt sure and I am inexperienced in these things.
Then he thought it was the calipers and greased them. Every time replacement brake discs and pads to be fair the 2nd mechanic didnt charge me for the brake pads every time..although their always seemed to be something else wrong that needed fixing...
Told me a few times it couldnt be anything else except user wear..the volkswagen mechanic told me that you need a special machine to replace the bearings and the other mechanics wouldnt have that that's why it was not diagnosed/done ??
