Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - best way into it.

    Hi there. I've been really interested in working as a therapist for several years now. I am intending to go back to uni in September and am trying to research my options. I want to eventually become a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. Now I have been given different advice regarding how I should do this. Some people are telling me to study psychology and then just basically start practising as a CBT. A CBT I used to see a few years ago told me to do psychiatric nursing first and not to go down the psychology-studying route.

    Any advice? I've wanted to do this for quite some time and now that I'm in a position to go back to college, I need to know how to get the qualifications that I need. Oh and I have the points/grades needed for psychiatry, psychology or psychiatric nursing.

    TCD runs courses in CBT- here's some info.

    A degree in psychology is not enough - a mental health profession is required. So if you did psychology, you'd need to be a qualified clinical or counselling psychologist with several years experience. Having said that, a degree in psychology is very useful.
