Activities for the unemployed?

I remember seeing a thread on boards a while back about unemployed weekly football sessions. Does anyone know if this is still going on and where I could find out about it?

If it's not still going, then maybe people could declare their intention here and we could organise something.

Besides football, does anyone know of other daytime activities organised by or for the unemployed?

There was a thread like this before and it resulted in flaming like saying "job hunt"

Many regional colleges who do courses give discounts for people on welfare. Apart from that, activities for unemployed people generally resemble activities for the rest of the population. The only difference being unemployed people have a lot more free time & flexibility.

I don't mean in terms of subsidised activities. I mean, have any unemployed on boards set up a kick around or discussed setting up other activities?

What you like to get up to in your spare time is your business, but let's keep this on topic please.

I've got a lot of benefit from spending some time with a networking group for professionals who have become un-waged (we don't like the term unemployed). http://westofirelandnetworking.blogspot.com/

I believe there's something called Dublin Jobs Club, which is what inspired the woman who set it up. Don't have any links, sorry, try Google.

In terms of people to do stuff with, I'd try to avoid socialising only with other unemployed people. It's handy that they're free all day, but they may not be the folks with for leads into organisations that might hire you - and if they do have leads, they may not share 'em! Sure some will, but many won't, and you need to maximise your chances. So try and play football (or whatever) with regular rather than all-unemployed teams.

Local Resource Centres / Community Development Projects often have opportunities for people who are out of work to get together and take part in activities. If there is one close by, why not drop in. Organising on the Internet is grand, but a centre which is local to you, will have other folk in a similar situation. Good luck
