Quick question for some of the DFB guys out there.

From what I know, which could be wrong, the Coast Guard does not appear on DFB's PDA list in the control room. Is this information correct?

If so, anyone know why not and how it could possibly be changed?

It's just come up in conversation a few times and was wondering what the situation on it was. There's still a lot of people out there that aren't fully aware of the CG's resources and availability.

    Thanks all! :)

the PDA is only used for the DFB's own crews, but the "coast gaurd" resource would be available in the back ground under external resources such as ESB, Bord gáis, civil defence etc.
curious to know why should the coast gaurd be on the DFB's PDA. and why would you want to change it?

Thanks for the reply. Didn't realise that only their own resources showed up in front of them initially. I was under the impression that when a type of incident was being selected that the appropriate resources for such an incident would pop up in front of the controller, whether DFB or external.

Why should the CG be on DFB's PDA?

Within DFB's response area the CG have the following first response resources available:

    1. 3 coastal search teams and casualty extraction teams for rough terrain. These teams are also equipped with 4x4 vehicles and Quad bikes. (Skerries, Howth, Dun Laoghaire)

    2. First response Cliff Rescue team (Howth)
(What a lot of people don't know is that the CG cliff team has the ability to lower Paramedics, Firefighters or Gardaí to a scene if required)

    3. The CG are also responsible for the tasking and co-ordination of 3 RNLI Lifeboat stations within DFB's response area. (Skerries, Howth, Dun Laoghaire)

    4. And not forgetting the CG Helicopter based in Dublin Airport.

Why I think it should it be changed?

From what I know there have been delays in the past in tasking the appropriate resources. A lot of the time it has taken the local Gardaí to arrive on scene and then ask for the CG as they seem to be more aware of the resources available in their area.

In a survey carried out in 2009 on the cliff paths around Howth head it was found that the vast majority of people would call 999 or 112 and ask for an ambulance if they saw someone in trouble on the cliffs.

What is the ambulance crew to do when they arrive on scene and realise that they cannot get to the casualty? It seems to be only then that they ask for the helicopter (which everyone is aware of) and are surprised to see a cliff rescue team show up also that have direct comms with the helicopter to co-ordinate the rescue either by sending down a rescue climber or leaving it to the winchman depending on the nature of the incident. This situation can cause a significant delay in the response to an incident and this is just one example of what has happened in the past.

There was a good exercise recently on Dollymount beach that DFB were running that seems to have gone very well and highlighted some the resources that are available to assist them if needed. There's a piece on it here

Surely in the interest of providing the casualty/patient with the best care shouldn't all of the appropriate resources be used to work towards a positive outcome?
