Bit of a misleading title but anyway....
I have been looking for work since I graduated from college and I have been to a few interviews but with no success as of yet. I came across a job that sounded really interesting and give me training which is something I really want as I am not confident in my abilities. There is also a guy from my class who I am good mates with who has better grades and experience. I told him about the job and told him to apply. But after thinking about it I think it was stupid as now I am up against him for the job. There is a few positions available but there is stiff competition.

So what I am asking was I stupid in telling him about it, do you tell your friends about the jobs you applied to who are also looking for work in the same area?

you sound like a nice guy who acted out of honesty and a desire to help before thinking....thing is, in this climate, u need to think of yourself first in work. so no, I wouldn't tell - why invite more competition?

then again, maybe if u help someone out, they in turn can help you down the line to secure a job if they are in a position to. just depends on how much you want to risk scenario 2 happening or not

    Concentrate on yourself first OP

What you do later is once you are off probation often companies have a referral scheme so you can refer your friend and you get money if they are hired

Once you have a job you can help your friends

nah I wouldn't define it as stupid, odds are you'll be up against many more strong candidates and even then the best candidates may not pass the interview based on the personal preference of the interviewer.

It was the decent thing to do. To use an old phrase "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Or in more modern terms "Karma's a b*tch".
