    Hi All

    Just a quick question:
Is there a minimum voter turnout required for a valid poll in our general elections. I had a scan through Bunreacht na hEireann and couldn't find any reference....

    Rgds

They were talking about this on newstalk during the week. According to Ivan Yates, he should know as an ex-spoofer, sorry politician, there is no minimum. I dont think it would have be a problem in the next election if there was one. There will be a huge amount of protest votes and the anger that is out there will surely bring people to the ballot box.

Does anger translate into votes or does it stop at moaning in pubs and on here?

My housemates were / are depending on social welfare or FÁS this year but none of them have ever voted and when I asked if they would vote in the coming election they asked what would be the point.

I hear ya but its the only chance they will get to express their opinion. Personally I cant wait for them to start calling door to door. I can remember the last time. "Hi we are calling on behalf of......." It was only later I found out that the person in question was in a car outside the estate with not even the common decency to call in themselves. that will not wash with a lot of people this time around.

In practical terms, no, there is no limit.

In an exaggerated case, I suppose you would need a minimum of 165* people (one for each TD) to vote nationwide.

    * 166 if the Ceann Comhairle isn't staying on.
