Budapest or somewhere else.

Got loads of hols left and decided to take some at the end of Jan or early feb. Everyone else is broke or has no hols left and so am I thinking of where to go for a short break on my own. I have always wanted to go to Budapest but nobody else wanted to go. Is it worth a 3 day stint? Hotels are really cheap for that time of year and flights are good as well.

Or can anyone give me another recommendation for a similar stay?

Budapest is a good destination in many ways, but you don't really give an idea of what you like to do when on holiday.

Do remember the continental climate: you can expect it to be very cold, perhaps with a lot of snow (you know, the sort of weather of which we have no experience). Much of what I like about Budapest involves being out and about. Around the end of January I would imagine myself diving into bars or cafes a bit more in order to warm up, and I might forgo the pleasure of having a beer in the outdoor bar in the City Park.

Thanks P. I am well used to the snow from my travelling, so our current weather woes are fine with me. I like an active holiday with a mixture of all sorts. The idea of the cafe's really appeasl to me. I also love the architecture of the city and would love to do a walking tour. Wouldnt mind doing something winter sports related as well. Dont think Budapest has anything to offer on that front, from what I can see.

I like the buildings and the streetscapes in Budapest -- handsome buildings from the days of empire, some communist-era concrete brutality, and some modern stuff. The trams are a great way to get around (buy a three-day ticket rather than a Budapest Pass, and never travel without it because inspection is heavy).

I think you can experience outdoor ice skating: http://www.ohb.hu/guide/ice_skating_rink.en.html
