On snowheads some mention of android apps which track your mileage, speed etc. However they track your assent and desent, which means any stats they give you includes times on lifts. There is a paid app, which calculates the desents only ; satski (think satski uses data in addition to GPS)

    http://www.satsportsgps.com/satski/

They do apps for various phones, and their own stand alone device as well.

Haven't tried it for skiing yet, but Sportypal has worked well for cycling, using the GPS to track speed and distance, and without a compulsary link to the Net. Obviously, that would cost a fortune in the Alps.

I've got one of these www.avocet.com/vertechpages/vertechski.html which I love.

From what I've been reading though, it seems that you don't need an internet connection for these apps as they work with GPS alone.

Is that the case or am I mistaken because you're dead right I would be in for a major data roaming bill on returning home for the sake of a gimmick ?

You'll need to download the maps to your phone before hand which could take up a fair chunk of space on the phone depending on what area your going to and the maps they provide.

If you need to know your distance travelled, avg, max speed etc, download my tracks or spedview, dont use data unless you upload you days skiing to a map.

I have done some skiing with SportyPal , last year:
    http://sportypal.com/Workouts/Details/136892
It maps the tracks and the lifts separate. With green is the line when i was going up with lift...

Wow, that is so cool. Did you have to use the internet connection to get the map?

If you want to see the map on the phone, yes you need data connection. But I didn't do that. I just used GPS for tracking with Sportypal. And then when i came home, i uploaded the track to their site sportypal.com, and i got all the rest of the data. Also there is and 3d map too on the site.

Just discovered these Android apps for a few countries:

    http://www.appbrain.com/browse/dev/intermaps

I've just had a quick look at the Austria one. There is potential fr them to make them quite a bit better, but it looks to have an up to date map view of open lifts and a summary of the weather so would be useful to have a look at over breakfast in the hotel before heading out for the day, if you've got some free wifi available.

Got a friend with an iPhone, and she had Skitracks which was brilliant. Used GPS to track distance, speed, degree of slope, and a few other things. It clocked us going at 75kph one day!

Not a ski app as such, but here is what I did yesterday and today:

    Monday

My top speed today was only a mere 64kmph. That is plenty fast enough on the runs I've been doing. I have clocked 96kmph on the GPS before in Zermatt on the way down into the Italian side. That was on a dead straight, empty and relatively gentle gradient with plenty of run out at the end. I wouldn't want to do it again though. A bit later that day I was passed by some cops on skis.

I'm pretty sure that speed was on one of the out-of-control turns we pulled. But the slopes were so empty we got away with going at speeds we'd normally never even attempt.

Have been using an app from the bergfex site. Excellent app giving resort info, conditions, webcams, weather and maps. Costs €0.79 and covers Austria, switzerland and Italian resorts. Highly recommeneded

Just had a look at itrailmap but it doesnt have sauze d'oulx on it which is where i'm heading to. I'll check out the other free apps mentioned.

If you have one of the three network mobile broadband modems i'm pretty sure yot doou have to pay roaming if you go to a country with a sister 3 network like Italy. I'm not sure of the other countries but they're listed on their site under 3likehome. I'm going to ring them today and triple check.

I have certainly made use of the 3likehome in Italy before, was actually staying in Switzerland but skied over the border and got mobile access during the day. They have changed the 3likehome quite a bit since then though and I don't think you get anywhere near the same access as you did before, except for in the UK. Also I think it was only Ireland's 3 network that had such a good deal, 3Ireland users can roam for "free" in the UK but 3UK users cannot in Ireland.

3likehome is great, available in Italy and i think Austria

However while you will latch on to 3 in one of the cities, you may not in a remote ski resort, mountain top. If you latch on to another non 3 provider, it will cost to make receive calls.

I found that I latched onto 3 at village level, but on mountain : one of the Italian providers, so always check you are on 3, before making any long calls home !

Failing that, use your phone's wi-fi to call/text for freee

I was just looking at the app store and they have a new ski app from Navionics. It's called Ski: Europe 2001 and it costs €4.99. Has anyone tried it and is it worth a fiver? The screenshot looks good and you can replay your days skiing.

sounds good, but is it an iPhone app or Android?

Any others like this? Ideally you wouldnt have to touch the phone much during the day, but it would record some of the info above

    I have the Navionics app
but it does not work well with the iTouch.
I don't think any gps does, I am open to any ideas
    Thanks

I used My Tracks for Android on a recent trip, running a Samsung Galaxy S.

Recorded runs from top to bottom and it gave avg. speed, max speed, moving time etc. etc. and also gives an option to export to various formats, CSV, KML (Google Earth), GPX etc.

It overlays your track on top of Google maps and brings all the functionality of that, i.e. you can overlay your track on terrain or satellite imagery layers.

It's a free app from Google. Added a screen-grab of an export into Google Earth with another showing stats for the run. The only thing I'd question is the elevation change, seems a bit off but I haven't investigated it fully.

I studied Geographical Information Systems and it is possible to import the data from the App. to the ArcMap programme. This was not prepared by me but shows some of what's possible. This is another run with the dots representing decreasing height.

I used My Tracks for Android

Thanks for the suggestion.. Just got it now.. Going to Soll next week so will try it out.. I find on My desire that the GPS really sucks the battery.. Wonder how long it would last!!

Going to Soll next week too and going to give the Ski Tracks App on the Iphone a test as this one doesn't appear to use data roaming and doesn't suck up too much battery power (I hope!).

One big advantage for me was that I am on "3" with my phone. I was in Italy and they have a "3" network there. This meant that I could use my phone as freely as if I was here at home and not incur any roaming charges whatsoever. Also meant I could occupy myself with facebook and boards while I was on the lifts! :p

Might be an idea to cache the maps of the area you are going to so that you don't have to have your data enabled when you get there. Then as you reach the top of the lift knock on GPS on the phone and click "Start Recording", when you get to the bottom click "End Recording" and knock off GPS again, this will help your battery life over the day. You can add some notes and give each run a name then as you are going up on the lift again/drinking Glühwein! :D:D. Oh and don't drop your phone! Have a good trip!

Could you do me a favour and, if you don't mind, PM me a cost breakdown of your trip? Starting to plan for my 2012 trip so getting prices together. Cheers.

If you can turn off your data connection then that will help with battery life, and you don't really want to risk and data roaming charges anyway. You'll still not get great battery life out of any phone with the GPS on though and may struggle to have it last the day.

It's quite easy to knock it on and off at the start and end of runs though. My battery easily lasted the day using this method. That was along with web browsing and many calls and texts every day.
