Knocking sound when running hot water

This question may read a bit funny, but I'll try it anyway....

My house has a fairly standard water system - cold tank in the attic, hot water cylinder on the ground floor, bathroom on the first floor.

I've noticed over the last few weeks that whenever I run the hot water tap, after a few minutes I hear a fairly loud knocking (almost banging) noise from the attic, presumably as the hot water tank is being replenished from the tank upstairs. I've never heard this noise when just running the cold water.

Most of the year I don't normally put on the hot water (have electric shower + dishwasher + electric heating) so, I'm not sure if this is something which would always happen, or if it is related to the current very cold weather.

Would anyone have an idea what this noise might be? :)
