Sorry if this is the wrong forum. Can anyone inform me on how the postage system works within the EU. I read on An Posts website that
Customs have a statutory right to examine all parcels coming from outside the EU.
I thought this was the case for all mail arriving in Ireland. Does mail originating in another EU country and arriving in Ireland just get automatically handed over to An Post without being scanned and processed by customs beforehand or what?

If you send yourself a parcel from Amsterdam, you can assume it will be "investigated" and you may even receive a letter from An Post inviting you to collect your parcel from the local sorting office. It's up to you whether you want to do so but I wouldn;t recommend it....

I suspect that statement is about custom duties. Any post can be inspected, e.g. for drugs, weapons, etc. however, there may need to be a suspicion formed first in the case of Intra-EU packages, e.g. a sniffer dog is alerted to a package from Amsterdam.

Ah yeah good point, I didn't even think about situations like that. If its not customs that scans packages coming from Amsterdam, who does though? An Post? If so I'm guessing they're only making sure theres no contraband in there, not seeing what they can tax.

Ah right I though all intra-EU packages were inspected by default. Thanks for the info.

Customs run the drug dogs over all international post received into Portlaoise.

Have a look at that customs program on RTE1 on Wednesdays.
