Does anyone remember when postage used to be a cheap rate for a Christmas or birthday card if you didn't seal the envelope, compared to the full rate for a sealed letter?

...more specifically, does anyone know when it changed to the current system?

yeah, there was a postcard rate and a sealed letter rate and anything that was unsealed you could get the postcard rate for it. can't remember when it changed. I remember one was 26p and the other 30p, then went up to 28p and 32p.

1997 or so I think. They merged the rates to 30p then.

Shows how little the letter rate has actually gone up compared to other stuff when you think about it!
