If its just a simple jump start then thats a rip off. If you ask nicely Im sure a Boardsie might oblige if there is one near you. It is christmas after all.

Go and buy yourself a jumpstart box, a cheap one is only about €40-50.
    You'll always have it then.
Or else ask a neighbour, I'm sure they will oblige.

Knock in to a few houses or ask people stopping by! I have had the jump leads with me at all times in the last 4 weeks.

Whereabouts in Bray are you stuck exactly?

I'm on the vevay road but I'm parked outside the house so technically I'm not stuck. I just need to head to Belfast tomorrow!

    €100 for a jumpstart?!?!?!?!?!?!?! WTF?!

Buy yourself a set of jump leads and get a mate, or even somebody on the side of the road to help!!

You could buy a new battery and have change out of €100!

A bit too far away for me to play the good Samaritan I'm afraid. But there's a Maxol petrol station and Tesco's (open 24 hr?) not too far away, you could possibly buy a set of jump leads in either of those. Anyway, if someone was to give you a jump start now, there's a good chance it'd be the same story tomorrow morning unless you can drive around a bit to get the battery charged up, which given the weather isn't a great idea.

Trying not to sound thick but would I get jump loads in a regular petrol station?

Maybe, like the Maxol place I just suggested. It's worth a try, or else Tesco.

Thanks for all the info folks I really appreciate it. I think I'm just going to leave it until tomorrow morning sometime and try again.

Unless there's a good reason why the battery went flat I think this is the best option.

If you've a few bods about you could pushstart it either?

There should be no need to go to a garage to get a jumpstart.Someone surely should have a set of jump leads.Or get a few people to push start you (if a manual box).

    It's an automatic!

You still didn't get the car started?..Check if your lights are working and if they are, than the engine is frozen and no battery will help you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 stuckinbray

yeah the lights are working, it must be the engine. Is there anything i can do to thaw it out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 vdriver

even if you unfroze the engine, water pump needs to be checked as it might brake...and if you already tried to start the car and the engine turned a little bit the pump might be already broke

ps: just open the radiator cap and have a look to make sure if its frozen or not

The lights working is no indication whether the car is going to start or not, since it requires a lot more power.
Your engine shouldn't freeze over unless you have nothing but tap water in your rad and that would be pretty unlikely nowadays, but as suggested better check your coolant vessel.
If the coolant has frozen it might blow a plug in the engine and it will drain as soon as it melts. Watch out for torrents of gushing liquid. :D
So, check coolant (and oil while you're in there) and if ok give her a zap.
You might also consider buying yourself a battery charger, it's not as brutal as jump start or starter box and usually gets you ready to go within 20 minutes.

Cant push start her so.Have you a garage?I assume not, but could you possibly use a neighbours/relatives garage to put the car into and maybe put some kind of heat in there to thaw her out.

Does your insurance policy have breakdown assistance, if so they can arrange to come out and jump it for you.

Vevay road? Ashgrove Interparts are on the Vevay. If you're trying to start your car and you just get a bit of a click and the lights on the dashboard dim a bit, your battery is fecked, assuming you have it in 'P' etc. Take the battery down to Ashgrove and they'll test it for you. They'll either sell you a battery charger or a fully charged battery if that's what's needed. Ask nicely and they might even bring it over to your house for you and fit it for the price of a pint or two.

Good thinking about Ashgrove Interparts, I'd forgotten about them.
