Just looking for some honest c&c for these. I think this is my first request for c&c, but don't go easy on me! Scans of some shots I took a few months ago (First time scanning film, wasn't really sure what the hell I was doing or if I was doing it properly, so it took a while to get them to look like they should). No theme, just random pictures of my trip.

Be as mean as you can be, that would be excellent :D You can see the rest of them on my pixie page here.

    Thanks.

*kicks ghostintheruins in the nads. insults his mother.

    now onto your pictures :D

    picture 1.

interesting shot the nearest face is out of focus would have been nicer if it was in focus but still a good shot.

    picture 2.

Again a nice shot, very atmospheric but something is wrong and i think it is the light itself. I would look at cropping it out I know you will loose part of the door but i do not like the light.

    picture 3.

like the different sizes of pictures, it is unfortunate that the womans head seems to be lost in the black picture behind her. I like the way the seats in front are out of focus it draws attention to the pictures.

    picture 4.

don't like but I can see that it is focusing on the floor below and the patterns are a bit mesmerising.

    picture 5.

Like it. a small quibble would be that the I think all the railings should be in focus.

    *stands on gitr toes.

Did you scan black and white negs to colour files? I'd recommend converting to black and white or at least keeping the tone constant across the whole set. It's distracting when it varies.

    I like no. 6.

Is this your first time to pick up a camera??? These are hideous!! ;)

I like 1 and 5 best. 4 not bad either, might need more contrast possibly or local contrast enhancement. The rest don't do much for me really.

I'd hand #1 on my wall! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I was bit half and half about going all the way black and white or keeping the colour in the scans. I might try the others in b&w and see what happens.

How about this for the second one? Better without the light? I'm not sure honestly.

I never even noticed that about the woman's head blending into the painting in the third picture. You're right. It's annoying me now but unfortunately I don't think there's a whole lot that I can do about it. :(

Thanks, yes I did scan black and white negs to colour files. I did it like that because I noticed that when I scanned them as black and white files for some reason the quality was vastly reduced. Parts of the image that should have been dark grey came out as pure black, but it didn't happen when I saved them as colour files. I'm not sure why, but like I said it's my first time scanning negs so I wasn't entirely sure of the correct settings to use or the correct way to do it.

It sounds like a good idea to convert them all to proper B&W's as you and borderfox said.

It's a camera? I thought it was just a big bulky clicking box

I've tried bumping the contrast slightly on the forth one, especially in the right side of the image, but i just can't get it to look right. It just gets much too dark, for my eyes at least.

    Thanks for the comments!

1, 5 and 6 are top shots. really like the shadows on the stairway, love the eeriness of the first shot and I think Sepia really suits it, though I am a Sepia fan. I don't think it works so well on the trees, but I love that sun!

The rest are just not as good, they don't grab me.

I'd have to PARTIALLY disagree. I'd agree that consistency would be nice.. so taking the same steps to create the non black & white images is a good idea.. but I try never to convert anything to black & white.. it really takes away a lot of potential detail because you can't have nearly as subtle shading by several orders of magnitude in a true greyscale image.
