How good would this phone be for a self employed accountant? The main thing she would want is just normal phone capabilities and being able to receive and reply to emails. She currently has a Blackberry which is driving her mad. She is not big into music, games etc so I dont think storage space would be an issue. Thanks for any pointers.

She will love the iphone. Really easy to use and will be more than capable of looking after her emails.
Honestly, would never see myself going back to a nokia/blackberry now that I've had the iphone.

I'm a one man business, travelling up and down the country. I use Macs rather than PCs, and the iPhone ticks every box for me. I have my email/internet on line, my calendars and contacts synced using MobileMe (pricey I know but you can get cheaper on eBay). Weather forecasts (now vital), diesel tracker, shopping lists, and always finding new useful apps........I know a lot may be available on Android, but iPhone works brilliantly with the Mac, and thats something I missed out on for years. 3Gs would be fine.

The benefits of an iphone 4 are in the increased display quality ( a show off feature)
And increased processing maninly driven by games more than standard functionality.

So for the use case you describe above then the 8gb 3gs would be more than capable.
