Will be heading to New York over the Xmas. Just after getting an iphone so still getting used to it, was just wondering what is the best way to set it up for the trip. I don't want any unexpected surprises when i get back, like big data bills or anything like that.

    turn off data in settings>general>network
also ring your provider and ask them to disable data when you're going just to be on the safe side

I'm just back from a trip over to the US and the wifi on my phone wouldn't work for some reason.

It was working fine when I left and when I got back but it just wouldn't work over there even though it connected to networks, it kept looking for data roaming.

    Hope you have better luck!

There is a specific setting for Data Roaming, it can be switched off in Settings-General-Network.

If you don't want to use the phone at all, you can turn on airplane mode (which turns off all connectivity) and then go into the wifi setting and switch that on, allowing you to use the net.

If you're going to have it on airplane mode the entire time, you might as well just remove the sim. That way you don't have to worry about switching airplane mode off accidentally etc

If you're REALLY paranoid just wipe a line out of the data settings. That way you can still receive texts and such without worrying about data.

ok so if i turned off "Data roaming" in settings would i be ok. Would "Cellular Data" also need to be off?

Basically what i want to do while i'm away is the following:

    - Connect to Wi-fi so i can use the internet, email, etc
    - Use the Apps that i have on the phone
    - Use the games on the phone

Not interested in making any calls or texts

Then definitely just take out your sim. By far the safest option!

If you are on contract with Vodafone then you should be allowed to use data when abroad as part of your normal monthly allowance of either 2GB or if a newer customer then 500mb.
