    Hey all,
Turned on my car the other day to find my radio had stopped workin properly, it's just giving me muffled sound, it was working at 7am and not working at 12! Noone was messing with it as far's I can tell, the arial's not been moved or anything. It's a 01 Corolla with the screen on the top and the tape player lower down..Any ideas what troubleshooting I can do on it? I imagine it's something pretty small that's the problem!
    Thanks!
    P

Maybe you should tell him to stop messing with it, (yes it's a typo)
I guess the pre-amp or amp is gone.

The tape player is working fine so there's no problem with the speakers themselves, if that makes a difference??
Is that sort of stuff expensive to get someone to fix it up?

How long is a piece of string? It depends on the radio and it's value as to whether it's worth having it repaired, but even finding that out will cost you, so it has to be taken from there. Strange as it may seem, I have been reading some posts recently on a common fault with the factory fitted radio in the jaguar xj6, which dies a lot and is a common fault. This led to discussions regarding a larger than usual number of radios acting up as of late, which has been put down to the cold weather! Apparently some weak soldered joints can shrink and crack, leading to malfunctions, go figure! Maybe if you switch it on and let the car warm up and see if it improves at all with the heaters on full blast? Worth a try..........

Thanks for the info, is there any troubleshooting I can do before I bring it to someone to take a look at? I've tried letting the car heat up but to no avail!

If it's a cassette player in a 01 Corolla, it would be cheaper to fit a CD player and catch up with last century's music technology than it would to have someone try to fix the unit you have.

Agreed, this particular radio gives a number of fairly common problems, best to get a standard type cd player instead.

The cabling on them are extremely dodgy in the pod's up on top which house the actual radio frequency scanner. Get a cheap CD player and pop it in down where the tape deck is and your all sorted.

Thanks for the advice all! I leave the tape player in there as I only listen to the radio or ipod. I got a handy tape for €2 in the €2 shop that'll play my ipod, much cheaper than an itrip! CD's are soo 5 years ago :D!
I've had the car for 4 years with no hassle, bought another car last week and the radio on this goes now I'm trying to sell it!
I'll pop in a CD player into it, might raise the value of the car!!
    Cheers!
