    Hi all

I am interested in making an image of my hard drive.

I don't know much about this area, so would appreciate some guidance.

If I make an image of my hard drive, does this store all my Program Files
    and the Windows Operating System?

How do I load this image onto a new machine?

What utility can I use, preffarbly one that is free and open source?

    Any general tips appreciated.

    Thanks
    B

HD Clone (Second time recommending it today), have a free edition.
It woks best if you create a bootable disk.

You can then select Drive or Partition on the left hand side and Image on the right hand side.

Be careful you select the right one.

This will back up everything (documents / OS / Programs).

The same program can be used to copy an image back to a hard drive / partition (but be warned it will Overwrite everything on the hard drive / partition, not just update).

Another thing to note is that the free version only supports going to same size or larger drives.

Be aware that an image of one machine will only work reliably on another with identical hardware.
