Ive bought a lovely long dress, I think I would get more wear out of it as a wide legged jumpsuit.

Can this be done? Would I risk ruining it? I can post a picture is needed. Any experiences sewers out there have an opinion would be great. Thanks.

If I got someone to do it for me how much would it cost, roughly?

It depends what it's made of and how close fitting it is. If it's slim fitting, extra fabric may be needed for the inside leg. It's very hard to tell without having the garment. Any local seamstress should be able to take a look and tell you free of charge.

Thanks will do that, just dont want to pay an arm and a leg to get it done as already have paid for the dress. Its a bit of a risk as the dress is nice but just not sure Id get the wear out of it.

Theres plenty of material, will check what material is, its quite light. Will post a picture later.

Is it on a waist? To look even remotely reasonable it would be necessary to remove it from the waist and cut a trouser pattern out of it, which would take a good deal of fabric. If it tapers towards the waist (A line) you would probably have to move the pattern down to accommodate the trouser shaping, which would make the leg length shorter. Without actually looking at it its impossible to know, as Das Kitty said, you need to have a dressmaker look at it.
