Can anyone recommend a 4-5 hour hill walk in Connemara over Christmas? I have hill-walked a fair bit in the west but I am looking for a decent relatively easy climb with good snow.

Thanks. Where is the best start/finish point for Devils Mother? I will be coming from Oughterard side.

We did a route taking in Mweelrea and Devil's Mother in plenty of snow a few weeks back (pictures on the snow watch thread!!) it took us about 7 hours, you could do a shorter version probably, we started from Glennacally Bridge and finished in Leenaun. Here's our route. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time what with the short days!! :)

Thanks Mickeroo. How long did that trek above take you? Looks pretty exposed on Devils Mother but I have been on Maumtrasna before and its fine.

Took pretty much exactly 7 hours, we didnt stop for long anytime as it was so cold! It's not as exposed as it looks, the ridge is wide enough in most places and even when it narrows up it never gets to the point where you'd get the fear :) If you've only the one car you could probably descend back down towards Glennacally again along the spur heading north, it's a pretty steep way down though so be careful in the snow, the spur down into leenaun is longer but much gentler. There's about 6-10 inches of snow on the ground in Castlebar at the moment so I'd imagine its pretty deep up on Maumtrasna now.

    Guys
Thats actually Maumtrasna not Mweelrea. Mweelrea is on the other side of the Killary and takes 7 hours on its own.

The walk above is a beautiful trek. Also can be done from the Nafooey side.
And if you want another good walk in that area walk the ridge on the eastern side Lough Na Fooey

Woops, slip of the tongue, meant to say Maumtasna of course, which is why I called it Maumtrasna two posts later! :D
