They seem to be unbelievably cheap - what's the hidden wallet trap?

Depends on what your idea of an old rangie is .
Is it a 1970-1982 2 door classic which if correctly bought and looked after can usually appreciate in value.
A 1982-1995 4 door classic , some with dodgy diesels installed that are really never going to go up in value , short term anyway , and are going to cost a fortune to tax.
Or the p38 94-02 model which are on a downward spiral pricewise .but are a nice car once running ok .

As said - rust. But get a good one and it will reward you. Most parts are very cheap and widely available. I have a '73 2 door and love it. They really com into their own in the kind of weather we are having now.

the current L322 model (2002- present) are now quite affordable compared to their new price. It is possible to get em from around €10k up. Plenty parts now available online

It's a Land Rover - get used to forking out regularly!

They are great vehicles if you are preapred to look after them - which costs money. The most sought after would be a 2 door or a late TDI Classic. Body rust usually kills them or electrical problems in P38s.
