How hard is it to take up the saxophone? I'm considering lessons but I don't have much musical experience, I played the recorder about 12 years ago in school.

I always wanted to have a go at playing the saxophone, but never did cos of the price and how hard I though it would be.
You can get one fairly cheap now so that's not a huge problem, but like you I didn't know how hard it would be to start.
Well now I can tell ya !!
I bought one three weeks ago, never played any sort of wind instrument, played plenty others, so got one with some trepidation. I got a Jupiter Alto sax, a pretty good starter sax.
I have no time for getting lessons, and won't till late next year at the earliest, so with that in mind and some youtube vids off I went.
It took me about two weeks playing around with it to get a nice clean note from it, and now at the start of week four I can play most major scales and even though I am highly self critical, I can say they are pretty good.
I can go from the bottom C right up to the top of the house C at this stage.
The fingering is not actually that hard either, a lot handier than playing chords on a six string guitar if you ask me! I spent ages getting the hang of playing scales on a piano, much easier on the sax.
I don't want to underestimate what I have left to learn of how difficult it is to master, but after three weeks I am way ahead of where I thought I would be.
Be careful of getting an ultra cheap lump of junk, I did my research before I bought so you had better do the same !
Else, go for it, I totally love it :-)
    HTH.

Thanks PaulieBoy, I hope it keeps going well for you. I might give that a go and see how it works out.
