hey just tought i post this while i was thinking bout it
recently bought a vintage VS6(SG copy worth bout 290-350 brand new but picked mine up second hand for peanuts) which i read some people reviewed as being better than the Epiphone G400(500 brand new) which is supposly the next best thing to a Gibson SG, but while i was also looking up a few other vintage brand guitars like the V6(Strat),TC200(Tele), and V100(LP), with reviewers saying that they were better than their epiphone/squier counterparts, which are bout twice the price in shop, after testing out a few i had to agree that vintage was the way to go with the vintage being made in the same way with a better sound to boot, so i beg the question, why pay 500-700 for an epiphone when there is an better alternative out there for 280-400, feel free to express your opinion.

A guitarist I play with got one of those peter green v100 les pauls and its a proper professional instrument. A step up from the epis I reckon, and I had an epi custom for years.

The Epiphone G400 is around €250-300 new.

its 255 at from thomann, but try haggling that price in a music shop, when i went into my local shop, they tried to charge me €455 for 1 saying it was knocked down from 499, and had a epiphone LP priced at 570, saw same one on thomann for 298, while he had a VS6 in stock for 298 with a tag on it saying special offer(did'nt buy that one but you can see the difference even in shop prices)
only place I've seen the G400 for that price is when they are ordered online

The vintage SG copy is savage for the price. i much prefer the epie LPs to the vintage ones though. There is a huge difference between an epie LP standard and a gibson LP standard though.

not a fan of the epiphone's, the neck is too overcoated and slow for me.
pickups are utter s***e and the fretboard feels terrible.

vintage make some nice stuff for low budget axe's, i'd say those peter green lemondrop's are almost as good as a few of the new gibson lp studio's i've tried, they're muck for something they charge 900 euro for.

picked up a vintage les paul 70s copy recently for my nephew. Beautiful guitar for the money, the neck felt and played as well as any guitar I played...

yeah, know there is a difference between epis and the real mccoys (gibsons), but everything i read rates epis as the closest to a gibson for budget rockers, personally i still prefer vintage though, just think the wilkinson pickups are better quality than whats on the epis and the neck is brill

At the risk of sounding like a troll I'd go as far as saying that the Vintage v100 is better than a Gibson made in recent years. Played both one after another one day and found the Vintage to have a much better tone. That's not to say it'd beat a 1959 model of course, but to be honest I think Gibson have been trading off brand recognition for a long time and there's been a big dip in quality in their stuff.

Got a new icon distressed v100 a few months ago for modding, pickups pots etc
It came with nickel hardware & when i pulled out the pickups i found a long neck tenon underneath ,couldnt believe it
must be a factory prototype .
The kluson type tuners were rubbish though
so replaced them put in a set of dimarzio virtual pafs with alnico 2 swap, new pots & caps
    love it
