Uni in Scotland - Will I regret it?

I've an offer to study in Heriot-Watt in Edinburgh and although I am really considering it I have my doubts.

It's a 4 year degree which is a long time to live away from Ireland for. I'll be nearly 19 when I start which means I'd be nearly 23 by the time I'm finished.

Has anyone regretted moving to England or Scotland to study? I'm really unsure.

In Ireland, I've my heart set on Dublin but have also applied to Queens Belfast but haven't an offer yet and amn't expecting one either..! :(

If you think about it with all the half-terms and Summers then it's like a series of mini vacations :D Seriously, if you're a total homebird then moving away might not be for you - but for many people it's the 'making' of them. Worst case scenario is you hate it and you come home - home is always here!

I lived in the UK long before I started uni so I can't really comment on the rest of your post (although as a QUB alum it gets the big thumbs up from me!).

    Hi!

Sorry, I'm just after seeing your post now!

What course you thinking of doing in Heriot-Watt? Just wondering coz im currently in my final year in HWU!

Moving to Scotland couldn't be easier! I'm a bit of a home bird as well, but with the availability of a certain cheap airline getting home couldn't be easier (Depending on what part of the country your from). Flights are pretty cheap (as long as you book a couple weeks in advance) and most of the time there's three flights a day in and out of Dublin.

I can guarantee you that the 4 years will fly by before you realise it and starting in first year is a lot easier than transferring over and trying to break in to already formed friendships.

With regards living and studying in Edinburgh and HWU, a lot of students tend to stay in halls in 1st year on campus and then move into town for subsequent years. If you fancy staying in town in first year I would recommend staying along either the 25 or 34 bus routes, the 45 has a very limited service. You can get the routes off the lothian bus website.

Anyways, Sorry its so long after your original post, but hope it helps!

Edinburgh's great I'm really glad I choose here over Dublin :D

I go home regularly and theres plenty of cheap ryanair flights if you plan ahead. Free fees in Scotland, not in N.I if that helps...

Only saw this now..! :P It's for Math, Statistical and Actuarial Science. Really thinking of going! Heading to the open day in March anyway. Only thing that's putting me off is the campus accommodation looks mank but if I go I'll probably end up staying there for the first year.

I would definitely advise studying in Scotland unless you really must see home every weekend. Going from home to college is a big step for anyone, though in Ireland students go home for 2 night, sometimes 4 a week, depending on their timetables.

Students in the UK will probably go home less often than you. I'm in my 3rd year in Aberdeen and go home around once or twice each semester. Some Scottish students wouldn't go home at all. A lot of the Irish in my class don't even go home too often anymore.

On whether to choose over Dublin or Scotland, I had the same choice. I didn't get my first choice in Dublin for a start, but it turns out the course is much better over here, with more jobs available when I finish (but that's another story). Nearly all of my friends from my school year went to UCD so sometimes I feel I'm missing out, but you meet great people here.

Sorry, long post. Hope it works out for you regardless of where you go. Best of luck!
