As I was driving down the N4 today i notice the distance to Galway and thought abut this. The swim would take place at Salthill, the bike from there to Enfield and the run would look something like this

Of course it would never happen as it would be a logistical nightmare but a pretty cool race I think... including the Motorway bike section on the M6/M4.

Dude you know, it's funny above often thought of something similar. It really sounds cool. Mend thinking-an unoffical race though, just some boardies. A challenge if you will.

I've often thought the same thing, as I tried to explain the magnitude of attempting an Ironman to people (as someone who has only ever done Olympic distances).

    Starting from Limerick (sorry):

    1. Swim 2.4 miles in the Shannon
    2. Cycle to Dublin
    3. Run the Dublin Marathon

Like to/from Galway, cycle distance is remarkably close.

Since it would be an unofficial event, perhaps it could be set up to start simultaneously from Galway, Limerick and Cork (although the Corkonians would have to go from somewhere closer than Cork city), where you do your swim, cycle to Dublin, then run a marathon course up there. The Dubs would have their choice of the three start points.

    Major Boards party afterwards.

Would swimming in the shannon not be too dangerous? What with currents etc...

A cross-Ireland IM would be amazing though. Not that I'd ever do a triathlon, let alone an Ironman . But still, quite an undertaking.

Wouldn't like to be doing last minute checks of running gear in T2 before the swim start :)

There's a coast to coast adventure race listed for next year.

    http://www.irishtriathlon.com/index.php/event-detail/?event_id=42

It doesn't seem to be a proper coast to coast as it finishes at Lough Erne!?!?

Took part in this last year, trust me it is a proper C2C. Well run event, brought to you by the same guys that run the Mourne Way Marathon. They supply you with maps for the route but TBH we didn't need them (apart from the last run section over the Mournes) They had all the main roads junctions marked and the kayaking was straight forward as it was along a canal.

It's a 2 day event breakdown below. Overnight camping in your entry fee which is on the shores of Lough Erne. Last time I was talking to Rowan he said they had more entered already for next years event than took part in this years event with about 80% from outside Ireland.

The day one breakdown of distances and disciplines will be as follows:
Beach Run – 2.5km Road Cycle – 107km Paddle – 26.5km Road Cycle – 17km Day one total distance – 152km * The day two breakdown of distances and disciplines will be as follows: Road Cycle – 122km Off Road Run – 32km Day two total distance – 155km * Depending on weather conditions we may introduce a short paddle at the start of Day 2

Personally, I always say to people that if they were thinking of doing an IM it would be lie swimming from where the Lake meets the River on the Corrib and swimming to Woodquay, Jump on the bike and cycle to Dublin and then run DCM. Piece of pi$$ :D

Used to be a three day IM over the October bank holiday weekend that took in the DCM.

Would it be harder or easier to do it over 3 days i.e. would the body be stiffening up?

Stretch and foam roll and no huge issue I'd have thought.
