Legal query re signing a severency form

I recently dropped into my former workplace to pick up my redundancy cheque and my former employer asked me to sign a document and he had drafted. I didn't sign it as I wanted to get some advice on it. It includes a paragraph stating that I have received independent legal advice regarding the redundancy and basically that I am content to leave etc.

Just wondering if this is a standard thing? I didn't feel comfortable signing because it's not true. Any suggestions?

    Talk to a solicitor? :)

I imagine they are trying to ensure people don't come back to them complaining about unfair selection for redundancy, etc.

You have no obligation to sign this document. Given that 1) there's no benefit to you in signing (you've already received your cheque) and 2) it's not even true there's no way I'd sign. Sounds to me like they're just chancing their arm.
