Power city ad incorrect

Just read a powercity ad in todays Times and it clearly states that only walker, sony and lg can receive mheg5.
And that walker is the only brand that can receive saorview.

It also states that samsung, panasonic, philips, toshiba and more brands cannot.

But my philips tv does receive both saorview and mheg5.

    That is some dodgy advertising.

Phillips are at least as compliant as Samsung and Sony. The ad was a bit unfair on them....albeit not on the poor benighted consumer which is what counts :)

What they are trying to get across is that currently only Walker TV/STB are Saorview Certified and 100% guaranteed to work. While the other TV's will work for viewing TV and DVB-EPG other features may be limited due to some incompatibles.

I heard Samsung are going to be getting certification so I'd say they'd be 100% compatible.

Do you know what the other features might be? I hope my tv will receive them.

The philps tv I have has the EPG working fine. Not sure how many days it shows but it definetly shows all the next days programming at least. I haven't tried any further days

No its not dodgy, it is actually true.

To be fair in order to receive MHEG5 on your Phillips TV you had to switch to UK country profile at setup. That is a lucky coincidence.

It also means you are dependant on everything else in the UK country profile settings being turned on in order for Irish DTT to work. That is not always the case and is adhoc to say the least among manufacturers.

Example: Switch to UK on a Panasonic DVB-T TV and it will switch off the ability to receive MPEG4. Why ? Because the UK use MPEG2 on dvb-t and adheres to the UK Dbook standard.

The average joe should not have to go through all this and have an indepth knowledge of how various manfuacturers have implemented what should be a standard country profile. They should just have to go through set up picking Ireland and it should work, not depend on stuff working though coincidence.

Remember these manufacturers are very much involved in the rollout of DTT through their participation on CEDA, the electrical retailers group.

But the philips also receives saorview with the normal ireland setting.
I have seen other ads from other electrical stores stating that the Irish DTT will work with their tvs for sale and not just walker.

Ad states only saorview works with walker. It is misleading.

    No.
Only CERTIFIED sets can claim Saorview. RTE NL are very firm on this

If the TV supports all the features of Saorview but is not certified, then it's Irish Digital TV Compatible. But at your own risk as it's not been tested by Teracom, the Independent Test Lab to prove the claim is true.

If a feature is missing, such as MHEG5 "middleware" to UK profile, then the TV can't even claim "Fully Irish Digital TV Compatible", only that whatever works, works. What ever is missing needs to be itemised.
