hi just bought a 17hmr and waiting for the license to come back.
just wondering if i need to buy a moderator for it?whats is the effective range of the rifle and would it be able to put down a fox at over 100 yards? thanks

I think you should have checked them things out before you bought it. A silencer will help some bit not a huge difference. It will put a fox down out to 150 but CAN YOU do that??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭<bert>

    thanks
have looked up a bit about the gun alright but just wanted to hear from people who use the 17.alot of people were trying to convince me to get a .22wmr instead. more than likely cant.ive only shot a few rounds out of a rifle in my life, been mainly using a shotgun upto now

Thats fair enough. Id stick with .17 rather than .22wmr. Lots of lads ere using .17. Buy gun and get plenty of practice. Make sure you can put 5 bullets one after the other into a 1.5" Target @ 100yrds max. then move out to 120 up to 150. Really you wouldnt want to be shooting fox further than 120 to be honest. could shoot crows, magpies out to 150.

    thanks
id say thats easier said than done
hopefully will have license in next few weeks and can start some practice

well capable of droping foxes at 150 and beyond, iv had a few at that range with no problems. i did put about 250-300 rounds through paper and other targets at different distances to get familliar with the gun before going after a longer range fox. shot placement is very important and being comfortable taking the shot, not just shooting because you see one! iv let a few walk away because they were out of range or the shot was not safe to take

    what rifle did you get?

its a cz 452 varmint heavy barrel, picked it fairly cheap wasnt to sure if the heavy barrel made any difference, does it apart from being heavy?

im looking into getting one soon too fingers crossed and i'd a great read about the gun on this site

    http://varmintal.com/17hmr.htm

shows the difference between the two bullets too on lots of different targets.

also has good charts about bullet drop etc for long shots.

i found a good link where 3 people testes all the hmr modifiers and had a reall good review. il look for it better later and post it up for u to have a read.
turned out nyway the ony for 50pound was better than the 100+ ones and they said it was really quite.

also is it threaded for a mod and did you apply for one on your licence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭<bert>

    thanks for the info
no its not threaded and i didnt apply for a mod never crossed my mind at the time but the more i read about them it sounds like i might need one.the fields that i would plan on shooting in mainly have alot of sheep and cattle in them and would prefer not cause too much of a stir when shooting

HMR is a bunny/vermin rifle, not a fox rifle. I own one, that's my opinion and others will disagree :) In the right circumstances sure, but to buy one specially for foxing, I wouldn't.

I agree, if your lookin for a dedicated fox gun go 223 or 204, less room for error

Have a heavy model .17HMR, dont know if it makes any difference but like the weight and look of it !! Also the straight barrel makes it nice and easy to thread :D

As already said it's not a dedicated fox round but a great all rounder !! have a .223 but TBH shoot more with the .17 as its generally the one I bring mowt of the time. Great for corvids and bunnies out to 200+, foxes at 120 no problem, nice cheap rounds !!

im in the same boat and from what i have read here and from other people here the hmr would suit me down to the ground as at 100 yards is still a decent shot for a newbie(imo) like myself and as said it would knock a fox at that range at that distance.(with the confidence and shot placement) im hoping to get one for the summer when im off from college.
you are aware i hope that you will have to send a letter to your local super for a mod with the reasons why you want it. ( theres a great cover letter on here by someone, just copy and change it a little.)

i hope your not suggesting he copy and forge a grant letter to use for himself:eek:
he would get locked up for something like that.

I think he means the letter accompanying his application stating why he wants to have a moderator ...?:)

I disagree with the silencer part. Ive a marlin 917v and surprisingly loud without silencer. I bought a SAK sound moderator for €60 didnt need to change license or anything but the rifle was threaded. The moderator makes a huge difference, all i hear now is the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

Not sure if a Hmr which is a rimfire needs a mod authorization, Deffo Centrefires do.

The SI of 2008/9 still causes a bit of confusion from time to time.
I'm sure my Old Pal Ezridax will jump in, he is much better at reading up on forms
    than I am.

    Not restricted (I think)
    (d) silencers capable of being used only with long rifled rim-fire firearms

No moderators are restricted. All moderators require authorisation.

Most if not all RFDs will have SAK mods, around 50-60 euro

Out of curiosity how cheap was cheap ??

HMR really does need a mod, IMO. Worst one I ever heard had a partially disassembled SAK screwed onto the front, pretty much a big muzzle break, awful, awful experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Have only ever shot .17HMR on a firing range, with hearing protection, and it was modded. How loud is it without the mod? On the same line as centrefire rifles?

Well guys if you don't mind me askin what is the hmr. Stand for and what is a22wmr thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭ormondprop

.22wmr (winchester magnum rimfire) commonly just called a magnum or .22 magnum
    .17hmr (hornady magnum rimfire)

the get them names as winchester and hornady first developed the cartridge

What they meant by "scope" there was a night vision scope, not your normal rifle scope.
