I've a 04 avensis diesel. Done nearly 100k miles myself (at 183k miles now) with no major problems. I've changed my battery, glow plugs, and a bearing on a wheel. Other then that, just timing belts and service parts. Think newer avensis has a chain.

Try for a UK import with leather. I'd recommend the hatchback over the saloon as it has a massive boot that's really accessible.

I've an 06 octavia. 185k on the clock. Its been good for the most part. 1st and only real problem was earlier this year when the turbo broke and it was an expensive fix (nearly 3k). Otherwise its a workhorse of a car. You could fit a circus troupe in the back (its an estate). Even in the snow it was averaging 5.0l/100k fuel consumption. If I was changing car I'd probably look again at a skoda.

The DSGs are giving trouble, especially the older ones. I'd avoid any pre '08 DSG, and even then I'd be wary. Seems to be a 6% failure rate, with a few cars having more than one 'box replacement. They're not maintenance free either and do require regular servicing.

A lot of the DSG boxes are giving trouble, and it's an expensive fix.

    Around €2,000 for a replacement.

Shame, as the 1.9Tdi DSG is actually really nice to drive.

Avensis auto is petrol only and the 4 speed on the 1.8 isn't great. Reliable but slow to respond to manual changes (my 95 fto had a more advanced gearbox) and not great on fuel.

Bit of an odd shortlist, what are the criteria?
